I have a family member that fell victom to a similar scam, but instead of e-mail, she responded to an ad in our local newpaper. She was to be a secret shopper. She was sent checks to purchase items, then return the items to the store and send the money back less her comission. The checks came back to her bank and she had to cover the entire amount of the checks. She has a family with 5 kids and a low income and was already having a hard time financially. When she fell for this scam, it just made her bad situation worse...

Unfortunately many of the people that I know who have been scammed, got themselves into the situation because they were trying to resolve an existing financial problems.
I've seen where the scammers have recognised the problem and used that knowledge to manipulate the victim. They have no conscience.
The first scam I ever received came by the postal service, but these days the first priority for them is to get you on a mobile phone and they can be very convincing.
